 Kyle Shepherd Trio

Kyle Shepherd Trio will perform at the Home of Jazz, Gonsalves Mansion on the 27th of October 2013, 7 p.m. onwards

 

 


 

Kyle Shepherd (Piano)

 

Kyle Shepherd draws his musical influences from the traditional rhythms, melodies and harmonies of Cape Town, South Africa as well as Jazz music and ethnic traditional music of the world. Abdullah Ibrahim, Zim Ngqawana, the Late Robbie Jansen, Keith Jarrett and Jason Moran. “My music is a direct representation of my traditions and the lineage of artists that came before me, and I am merely a portrait of their mastery.”

 

Shepherd started his musical journey at the age of five on classical violin. However, at the age of fifteen (15) (which was also around the time his love for Jazz and improvised music was growing), Shepherd discovered that he had an innate, natural affinity for the piano which has since become his main instrument. This multi-instrumentalist also plays the saxophone, African traditional instruments and sings.

 

Seigo Matsunaga (Double Bass)

 

Born 1984 in Japan, Bass player and composer and Producer.

 

He received a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and participated Summer Performance program in 2002. Later he went to New York to study with Matthew Garrison. After leaving New York, he went Copenhagen to study with bass legend Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, and later he studied intensively with Hein van De Geyn in South Africa and with Michael Klinghoffer in Israel,He founded the Asian Cape Connection in 2005, and began to produce concerts and CDs with musicians from around the world. In 2009 He renovated “SHIKIORI” 130years old Japanese house and Start organizing concerts in the Countryside of Japan, Played with David Matthews (Manhattan Jazz Quintet) Lars Jansson, Ed Thigpen, Dave Liebman and many others. 

 

Sebastiaan Kaptein (Drums)

 

Prominent drummer from Holland, now resident in Okinawa/Japan,

He graduated at the Conservatory of Groningen in 1996, and then went on to study and play in New York with several teachers.

He has performed and recorded with the likes of Brad Mehldau,

Toots Thielmans, Mike Del Ferro, Jesse van Ruller and many others.

Sebastian has toured in over 50 countries.
